Deconstructing Existing E - Learning Websites

This website is not greatly attractive. There are bursts of colour but it looks boring.
I clicked on maths and alphabet and the things that came up are suggestions for games beginning with that letter. There is also to much text on the page for a young person and so I think the target audience for the site is predominantly teachers and parents.

Interface Layout this is very much a standard web layout with a banner at the top and the navigation bar down the side. The site is very colourful and the space for the content powers the page taking up most space. Pictures are used as a visual indicator for the young child, while the white writing does possess some long words, which only the parent would understand.

The content is from the BBC website and so the games and the stories come from the bbc characters that the children may see on TV. This is actually a good ploy as children can learn through familiarity and so the characters will keep their attention while they learn. I may have to use images, which they are familiar with.

PROJECT PROPOSAL

Subject:

E Learning, I have thought of many ideas all of which have come to dead ends. My thought processes and work has really been like walking through a maze. Firstly I took the idea of a java converter, which aids all people who hate java. I researched and explained my idea before realising in the brief I had to make an application not just simulates it. So I hit my first dead end, I ten tracked back and decided to incorporate the learning of java with e Learning. The problem here is there is no real social or cultural context. Here I only revised e Learning and not much past this. I then went onto e Learning in more detail and into a more specific area. Before I came to this university on this course I wanted to go into teaching. I decided to do a degree first and then possibly the teaching after. Me thinking that this was media and that was what I would like to teach. I have also done work experience in a primary school in year 13. I therefore know about the learning there. In this project I will therefore have the chance to teach using my newly acquired MLA skills by making an e-Learning package for very young children.

Relevance
As I said I worked in a primary school and saw the capabilities of the children and also the learning software they use. Also I remember the way I learned in primary school and before.
Children learn most between the ages of 2 and 5

Children between the ages of 2 and 5 years make huge strides in their physical, social, language, emotional, and mental development. They gain confidence in their skills, explore more of their environment, and become more independent. (health.yahoo.com/ency/healthwise/ta3612)

Many children don't get taught by their parents at home and so school is a catch up. Also the software in school are games, which rely on some pre-existing knowledge. Children also see the games as a fun way of learning and more likely to spend more time using the software. Software on the net is not always free and not always relevant.

Many young children would benefit from an E Learning package, which teaches the basic of literacy and maths such as the alphabet and 123's. It is my proposal to create a website with out words, just speech and buttons. I want to do this as children of this age understand words but can't really read. Also I will teach them to use a computer mouse as I do this. Also the games will be relevant and advertise cbbc characters as to me on websites like cbbc they are plugging the characters of shows more than the information.

I can then put this on the Internet for young children to try and learn.

Outcomes:
The outcomes will be that children will be able to interact with a computer from a young age (under parent supervision to help) They will learn the fundamental basics of language, maths and also enhance speech.
Overall young children will be entertained while they learn giving their parents a rest. Also hopefully their learning capabilities will improve aiding them at school.

Cultural context:
We will have clever children in the future!

What makes mine different?
All the E Learning websites that I have seen have long and complicated words alongside pictures, which young children would not understand. It would be n ice to make the child more independent. Also the colourful games and stories here are just a distraction and don't teach the child as much as what I propose to do.

When I was 4/5 at school when I had finished playing it was playtime. Children don’t learn their abc’s and 123’s at school they learn them at home. I also did a work experience in a year 3 class in which some children didn’t know 4 + 1 was 5.
Learning is a problem although GCSE’s are getting “easier”, some children are leaving primary school with poor literary skills and this is because it takes them the first 4 years of primary schools to learn how to read and write.
My proposal is to create an e-Learning solution probably on the internet, which obviously will be free. So that children who have no idea of abc and 123 can learn in advance of their first day at school and therefore one day children maybe able to learn a lot quicker through the later years of primary school.
Finally this will be my last point of study as this is a solution I can create!
I will now look for some sites of e-Learning for young children on the web.

Changed My Idea AGAIN!! I’ve decided now finally to look just at e-Learning and specifically at learning for young children of 4 and 5

In this site it shows figures on how test results are improving. Maths and English are steadily getting better , however the percentage who are getting satisfactory marks is high. I believe with e- Learning children would benefit from learning earlier in their lives and therefore would be cleverer when they sit the test at the age of 9 or 10.

I’m struggling to find a feasible final idea. I've Just found out you actually have to make the thing not simulate or pretend and since both ideas for this are beyond me I’m going to look at ways of learning the code,incorporate the E-Learning to make a way of a least learning the basics easily!

Summary where am I going with this?
I’ve talked about language with relevance to learning, with relevance to computers and also with relevance to code.
I’m not the strongest coder and I’m not able to speak or code the language of java or visual basic or any other coding language, which I am unfamiliar to.
It is my dream to be able to either code in pure English, which I obviously speak or convert English into java.
Pseudo code is halfway between English and a coding language. Pseudo code is only a language which sets out what you want to say before translating it into say java. This means you need an understanding of the format of the language your going to use.

Pseudo code is a kind of structured English for describing algorithms. It allows the designer to focus on the logic of the algorithm without being distracted by details of language syntax.
So it is my dream to code in English SO Instead of the pseudo code below

This way only the principles would need to be understood and not the exact syntax.
This would lead to more people being able to code and the world of software, the internet and also digital installations would become more creative, expansive and more diverse.
My other thought was a converter from English to java
This has not yet been done although there are converters, which convert other programming languages to java.
I therefore feel that if this hasn’t yet been done that it is obviously a little beyond me. Otherwise someone would have already made a fortune of it!

Xerox created the star interface, which obviously made computers easier to use as no longer did a computer user need to learn the language of DOS, but were to learn how to use signs and symbols, which represented the files they were to use.

Learning and remembering information (ie language)
Trying to learn single words with no relative meaning to your life is extremely hard.
“Memory for verbal material is greatly enhanced if one can develop visual images corresponding to the material”
(Pavio, 1971,1986)
(Reder 1982) has found that memory for detail is available initially but decays rapidly while memory for meaning is retained.
This is why command line interfaces like MS/DOS are no longer usable and were holding back the computer industry. This is also why the Xerox star interface has increased computer usability.

DOS and how this language affected computers
As DOS had its own set of finite words and a finite alphabet. It is a language, however only the computer users of the time, understood this language. This language was foreign to all others and so if you wanted to use and understand computers, you yourself would need to understand and learn this new language. The problem was then, that there was only a fixed number of opportunities to learn this language and this restricted the computer industries.

Coding in my eyes is a way for humans to speak the language of computers and the ultimate power is with the coders. Learning visual basic or java is very much like learning a foreign language. As a computer user, I communicate with computers all of the time. I use input devices such as the mouse or keyboard to interact with software. The software is the common language of humans and computers. Software allows the interaction between humans and computers. Software developers use coding language software to create new ways for regular computer users to communicate with the computer. The software acts as the translator. However not every computer user can speak the language of the computer without the translator. This means we the users will never be able to create new works with out being confined to the limits of the software we are using.
