We see familiar things more clearly than we see objects about which we have no stock of memories.
- Aldous Huxley

USERS OF WEB DOCUMENTS don't just look at information, they interact with it in novel ways that have no precedents in paper document design. The graphic user interface (GUI) of a computer system comprises the interaction metaphors, images, and concepts used to convey function and meaning on the computer screen. It also includes the detailed visual characteristics of every component of the graphic interface and the functional sequence of interactions over time that produce the characteristic look and feel of Web pages and hypertext linked relations. Graphic design and visual "signature" graphics are not used simply to enliven Web pages - graphics are integral to the user's experience with your site. In interactive documents graphic design cannot be separated from issues of interface design

This site gives all I need to know about making a good, relevant Graphic Interface

Graphic user interfaces were designed to give people control over their personal computers. Users now expect a level of design sophistication from all graphic interfaces, including Web pages. The goal is to provide for the needs of all your potential users, adapting Web technology to their expectations and never requiring readers to conform to an interface that places unnecessary obstacles in their paths.

Therefore here it says that the interface should give the user maximum control this is why I am going to use buttons and sound. It also says “never requiring readers to conform to an interface that places unnecessary obstacles in their paths” This is why there is going to be no text as this is an obstacle, which isn't needed.

Negotiated Project

WEBSITES WITH RELEVANCE

http://www.school-for-champions.com/elearning/default.htm#Improving
Each part is on the above Site

Introduction
Purpose of these eLearning Lessons
What is eLearning?
Blended Learning
Improving Business with eLearning
When a Company Should Consider Using eLearning
eLearning, CBT and WBT are Effective Training Solutions
Return-on-Investment from eLearning
Developing eLearning Material
Initial Considerations Before Designing
Development Steps
Authoring Tools
Using Multiple Choice
CBT Delivery Media
Satisfying Users
Combating Boredom
Study Some Examples
Developing a Simple Tutorial in RoboHelp

NEGOTIATED PROJECT

WHERE TO GO FROM HERE - MY PLAN

1. There are bursts of colour but it looks boring.
I clicked on maths and alphabet and the things that came up are suggestions for games beginning with that letter. There is also to much text on the page for a young person and so I think the target audience for the site is predominantly teachers and parents.

Deconstructing Existing E - Learning Websites
www.bbc.co.uk

Interface Layout this is very much a standard web layout with a banner at the top and the navigation bar down the side. The site is very colourful and the space for the content powers the page taking up most space. Pictures are used as a visual indicator for the young child, while the white writing does possess some long words, which only the parent would understand.

The content is from the BBC website and so the games and the stories come from the bbc characters that the children may see on TV. This is actually a good ploy as children can learn through familiarity and so the characters will keep their attention while they learn. I may have to use images, which they are familiar with.

Site content for young children aged 2 - 5 -
ART
GUESS THE SOUND
STORY TIME
POETRY
ANIMAL SOUND GAME
NOTHING TO DO WITH ABC AND 123

I DID FIND A COUNTING GAME WHICH WAS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE BUT I WILL TRY AND MODIFY THIS AS IN THE GAME NEEDS A PARENT TO HELP.

Negotiated Project

PROJECT PROPOSAL

Subject:

E Learning, I have thought of many ideas all of which have come to dead ends. My thought processes and work has really been like walking through a maze. Firstly I took the idea of a java converter, which aids all people who hate java. I researched and explained my idea before realising in the brief I had to make an application not just simulates it. So I hit my first dead end, I ten tracked back and decided to incorporate the learning of java with e Learning. The problem here is there is no real social or cultural context. Here I only revised e Learning and not much past this. I then went onto e Learning in more detail and into a more specific area. Before I came to this university on this course I wanted to go into teaching. I decided to do a degree first and then possibly the teaching after. Me thinking that this was media and that was what I would like to teach. I have also done work experience in a primary school in year 13. I therefore know about the learning there. In this project I will therefore have the chance to teach using my newly acquired MLA skills by making an e-Learning package for very young children.

Relevance
As I said I worked in a primary school and saw the capabilities of the children and also the learning software they use. Also I remember the way I learned in primary school and before.
Children learn most between the ages of 2 and 5

Children between the ages of 2 and 5 years make huge strides in their physical, social, language, emotional, and mental development. They gain confidence in their skills, explore more of their environment, and become more independent. (health.yahoo.com/ency/healthwise/ta3612)

Many children don't get taught by their parents at home and so school is a catch up. Also the software in school are games, which rely on some pre-existing knowledge. Children also see the games as a fun way of learning and more likely to spend more time using the software. Software on the net is not always free and not always relevant.

Many young children would benefit from an E Learning package, which teaches the basic of literacy and maths such as the alphabet and 123's. It is my proposal to create a website with out words, just speech and buttons. I want to do this as children of this age understand words but can't really read. Also I will teach them to use a computer mouse as I do this. Also the games will be relevant and advertise cbbc characters as to me on websites like cbbc they are plugging the characters of shows more than the information.

I can then put this on the Internet for young children to try and learn.

Outcomes:
The outcomes will be that children will be able to interact with a computer from a young age (under parent supervision to help) They will learn the fundamental basics of language, maths and also enhance speech.
Overall young children will be entertained while they learn giving their parents a rest. Also hopefully their learning capabilities will improve aiding them at school.

Cultural context:
We will have clever children in the future!

What makes mine different?
All the E Learning websites that I have seen have long and complicated words alongside pictures, which young children would not understand. It would be n ice to make the child more independent. Also the colourful games and stories here are just a distraction and don't teach the child as much as what I propose to do.

Negotiated Project

When I was 4/5 at school when I had finished playing it was playtime. Children don’t learn their abc’s and 123’s at school they learn them at home. I also did a work experience in a year 3 class in which some children didn’t know 4 + 1 was 5.
Learning is a problem although GCSE’s are getting “easier”, some children are leaving primary school with poor literary skills and this is because it takes them the first 4 years of primary schools to learn how to read and write.
My proposal is to create an e-Learning solution probably on the internet, which obviously will be free. So that children who have no idea of abc and 123 can learn in advance of their first day at school and therefore one day children maybe able to learn a lot quicker through the later years of primary school.
Finally this will be my last point of study as this is a solution I can create!
I will now look for some sites of e-Learning for young children on the web.
http://www.woodlandwideweb.the-office.org.uk/elearning.htm
http://www.e-learningcentre.co.uk/eclipse/Resources/index.html
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/preschool/
http://www.teachingstrategies.com/pages/page.cfm?pageid=96
teachingstrategies.com is a social study of what 3 – 5 year olds can do and how they learn.

Negotiated Project

Changed My Idea AGAIN!! I’ve decided now finally to look just at e-Learning and specifically at learning for young children of 4 and 5
www.ofsted.gov.uk/publications/annualreport0405/4.1.6.html
In this site it shows figures on how test results are improving. Maths and English are steadily getting better , however the percentage who are getting satisfactory marks is high. I believe with e- Learning children would benefit from learning earlier in their lives and therefore would be cleverer when they sit the test at the age of 9 or 10.
This site tells all about e-learning including a definition, books, articles, websites and companies
http://www.agelesslearner.com/intros/elearning.html

Negotiated Project

Examples of E-Learning in the army
http://www.gcn.com/print/vol20_no13/4380-1.html
E-Learning Java would make it more fun as Java and coding in general is a very dry subject and my idea was to make an e-Learning package for 10-15 year olds so java would be easier to learn.
What would be the point of this?
Sure we would have a few more coders who may go on to make some more software, expanding on what has currently been created but this socially would not help!

Negotiated Project

THIS SITE IS ALL ABOUT WHYS AND HOWS OF E-LEARNING
http://www.school-for-champions.com/elearning/default.htm#Improving%20
This is a general E-Learning site about the benefits and problems
http://www.internettime.com/itimegroup/people/guide.htm

e-Learning has enormous potential for making learning faster, more thorough, less tedious, more challenging, less expensive, and more fun, but if we try to cut costs by removing people from the equation, e-Learning will be but another failed experiment. Pseudo code is only a language which sets out what you want to say before translating it into say java. This means you need an understanding of the format of the language your going to use.
This link tells of exactly what pseudo code is.
http://www.csc.calpoly.edu/%7Ejdalbey/SWE/pdl_std.html
Pseudo code is a kind of structured English for describing algorithms. It allows the designer to focus on the logic of the algorithm without being distracted by details of language syntax.
So it is my dream to code in English SO Instead of the pseudo code below
Set moveCount to 1
FOR each row on the board
FOR each column on the board
IF gameBoard position (row, column) is occupied THEN
CALL findAdjacentTiles with row, column
INCREMENT moveCount
END IF
END FOR
END FOR
I would be able to write what I liked and it would pick out the important words
Set the move count to the number one
Now for each row on the board
And for each column on the board
Check if the game board position is occupied
If it is call findadjectivetiles in the row / column
End the if
End the for
This way only the principles would need to be understood and not the exact syntax.
This would lead to more people being able to code and the world of software, the internet and also digital installations would become more creative, expansive and more diverse.
My other thought was a converter from English to java
This has not yet been done although there are converters, which convert other programming languages to java.
I therefore feel that if this hasn’t yet been done that it is obviously a little beyond me. Otherwise someone would have already made a fortune of it!

Negotiated Project

How a well understood language aids communication
Xerox created the star interface, which obviously made computers easier to use as no longer did a computer user need to learn the language of DOS, but were to learn how to use signs and symbols, which represented the files they were to use.

Negotiated Project

Learning and remembering information (ie language)
Trying to learn single words with no relative meaning to your life is extremely hard.
“Memory for verbal material is greatly enhanced if one can develop visual images corresponding to the material”
(Pavio, 1971,1986)
(Reder 1982) has found that memory for detail is available initially but decays rapidly while memory for meaning is retained.
This is why command line interfaces like MS/DOS are no longer usable and were holding back the computer industry. Individual languages use sounds, gestures and other symbols to represent objects, concepts, emotions, ideas, and thoughts.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language
* In mathematics, logic and computer science, a formal language is a set of finite-length words (i.e. character strings) drawn from some finite alphabet, and the scientific theory that deals with these entities is known as formal language theory. Note that we can talk about formal language in many contexts (scientific, legal, linguistic and so on), meaning a mode of expression more careful and accurate, or more mannered than everyday speech. ...
“so language is a systematic means of communicating with the use of sounds or conventional symbols.” (see above) language is the device of communication and everyone communicates. Humans communicate with humans, humans communicate with computers. We do this through a common language, which is recognised by both parties. If one party cannot understand the language the other is using to communicate, then the communication breaks down.
As a computer user, I communicate with computers all of the time. I use input devices such as the mouse or keyboard to interact with software. The software is the common language of humans and computers. Software allows the interaction between humans and computers. Software developers use coding language software to create new ways for regular computer users to communicate with the computer. The software acts as the translator. However not every computer user can speak the language of the computer without the translator. This means we the users will never be able to create new works with out being confined to the limits of the software we are using.

NEGOTIATED PROJECT

Even better idea, things that I really don’t like and that needs changing.
Java code and vb code, possibly code in general
Early research for two ideas
1- E-Learning
And
2- Coding
e-Learning because this could be useful, have a purpose and could be enjoyable.
